since i know my husband rarely comes on this thing anymore, and neither do i for that matter, i know i can tell you this secret without him finding out. so don't tell him.
for valentine's day, i got him a first edition nineteen eighty-four. he collects this, his favorite book, and he has about ten different copies. he's got copies in other languages, and some pretty cool old ones. but the first edition is hard to find in good condition, and it always costs too much. but i found a decent on for a decent price on ebay, so i'm very very excited. i also got him a first edition of a philip k. dick book he doesn't own that i've never even heard of before. i'm also very excited about that.
the only crappy thing is i don't think they'll be here by wednesday, so i got him some chocolate and some candles and i'm going to draw a picture of the books and put them with his little gifts.
we're not celebrating the big silly day until friday anyways, since he has school till eight on wednesday. but friday we're going to disneyland for the whole day, and we have reservations to eat at the blue bayou. it should be a very nice day.
i know this holiday is made up and pointless, but i've always enjoyed it. even if it was created by greeting card and chocolate companies just to milk an extra buck out of us, why not have a day just to enjoy your loved ones and make them feel special?
i like it.
so happy valentimes. i hope it's a good one.
I don't know who the crazy person was who thought I could post every
day for the entire month of November, but boy were they wrong.
Obviously someone wasn't thinking about the fact that I had to move,
and that it would be Thanksgiving, and my brother's 13th birthday, and
that my great-grandma would die, and that I would have no internet for
a week, and that I would be sitting around waiting for paint to dry and
appliances to be delivered, and that I'd be cleaning the old apartment
and packing box after box after box and moving fish and cats and
things... and, well, you get the idea.
That's not to say that we're done moving now. Because we most definitely are not. I went to the apartment today and got the last of our junk and turned in our keys, so I guess we're officially "moved." But nothing is really where it goes, and it's all kind of stacked up against all the walls, or in the middle of the floor. But there is this, and it makes the rest of it almost worth it:
We haven't organized it yet and we still have random books in random places throughout the house, but it's still purty. We had to paint them because they were a very yucky dark seventies wood, and the wall behind them was yucky off-white. It took forever. And we're not quite done. But a good portion of the books are in their new, happy home, so it's good enough for now.
I guess I'm off, since I've got 80 quatrillion things to do. I'm pretty disappointed that I failed my NaBloPoMo goal... but I guess it couldn't be helped. Hope you all had a very lovely week. Thanks for all your kind words and friendly comments. Even if I didn't complete NaBloPoMo, I think I've at least gotten in the habit of wanting to post on a more regular basis. So I'll be back soon.
What character in a book can you connect with or relate to the most?
Submitted by Eating A Book.
Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I don't know if it's mostly wishful thinking, since she's my favorite character in my favorite book, or if maybe she's my favorite character because she reminds me of me. Either way, I've always felt a connection to her. And maybe I'm not as witty as she is, or as strong, but I've always felt that way inside. I've got a Jane and a Lydia for sisters, and I always found it amusing to tease the boys (in a playful way -- get your mind out of the gutter). The only problem is that my Mr. Darcy is really more of a Mr. Bingley, but I completely prefer it this way.
I read some responses to this, my favorite QotD so far, and I had to laugh. On the first page alone, I saw three Jane Eyres, two Holden Caulfields, some Tyler Durdens... I guess us Vox users don't branch out much in the literary field, do we?
1. I've been reading this series of teenagey books. This is the latest.
I won't read them in public, as I get embarrassed by the fact that they
are written for 14-year-olds. Also, because they
have a tendency to make me snort.
2. I will read anything that has even the tiniest thing to do with Jane Austen. I have a huge collection of Pride & Prejudice "continuations" and other books like this.
3. See my point? I read this last week.
4. I also read anything by Meg Cabot. I have no idea why. It's usually
my mindless guilty pleasure, but it seems to fit right in with
everything else I've been reading this week. And this one had a
surprising sex scene at the end. Far cry from Princess Diaries, I tell
you.
husband just left for his digital design class, so i'm home with not much to do. one of the best things about him being in school is the massive amount of alone time i'm left with. one of the worst things about him being in school is the massive amount of alone time i'm left with.
i think i'm going to stray from the pattern and try a kitty moopy. i know, i'm living life on the edge. it's what i do.
